Things You Save in a Fire

An achingly sweet story of love, forgiveness, and the real meaning of courage. Let these firefighters carry your burdens for a while so you can sink into this delightfully fun novel!

It’s a strange thing to know about yourself, but there it is: I’m at my very best when things are at their very worst.

Synopsis:

Cassie Hanwell was made to deal with emergencies and tragedies – other people’s, not her own. As a firefighter in her Austin, Texas, fire station, she’s certainly seen her fair share of them. But when her ailing mother asks her to move across the country to help her, she has to give up everything she’s been working toward. In the run-down fire station in the suburbs of Boston, Cassie sees that this new position will be VERY different from Texas. She is treated like a newbie from the team that isn’t so thrilled to have a “lady” on their shift, and is frustrated by the feelings she has toward the rookie. As her resolve to not get close to anyone starts slipping, she wonders if she’ll lose more than she’d gain.

Review:

I needed a break from the many emotionally heavy books I’ve been reading, so I decided to pick up Things You Save in a Fire by Katherine Center. It’s the first book of hers that I’ve read (but it definitely won’t be the last!), and I’ve been seeing it all over my Bookstagram. Man, am I happy that I chose this one to balance out my melancholy!

Although this sweet novel deals with some heavier issues (assault, sexism, addiction, death), they were tempered by such an endearing story. Love, family, friendship, forgiveness and courage all shine so sweetly in this story!

I loved the in-depth look into the lives of fire fighters – their routines, their training, their gear. Mostly, I enjoyed the sense of silliness and camaraderie they build with each other to stave off the heaviness of what they see on the job. It’s such a personal and humane look into the lives of people who are there to protect OUR lives.

Choosing to love—despite all the ways that people let you down, and disappear, and break your heart. Knowing everything we know about how hard life is and choosing to love, anyway.. That’s not weakness, that’s courage.

I highly recommend this book! Let these firefighters carry your personal burdens for a while so you can sink into this delightfully fun novel!
