The Wicked King

Holly Black continues her magical trickery in this second installment of The Folk of the Air trilogy – masking betrayals and feelings to maintain control and power over the throne of Fairie.

If he thought I was bad, I would be worse.
If he thought I was cruel, I would be horrifying.

— Holly Black

Synopsis:

Jude Duarte, mortal in Fairieland, has bound the wicked king Cardan to her in order to protect her brother Oak (the heir to Fairie). If only Cardan was easier to control, instead of undermining her at every turn. When it becomes apparent that someone means to betray her, Jude must rely on her spy skills to uncover the traitor while keeping her feelings for Cardan at bay in order to maintain control of the throne.

Power is so much easier to acquire than it is to hold on to.

Review:

Oooooooh man, you guys. I thought I was sucked in to the magical world of Fairie last time with Holly Black’s first book in this series, The Cruel Prince. BUT THIS ONE. Whoa!

The pining, the betrayals, the intrigue! *Collapses in chair from too much exertion*

Lots of extra points for the strong female characters in this story. This isn’t your grandma’s fairytale, people. Forget weak ladies sighing and fluttering about being (prettily) seen and not heard. Ooooooh no, these are fierce females. Swords and spies and trickery galore! *Applause*

As I settled into this second story in Black’s trilogy (November can’t come quick enough for the final installment), I got to know the characters better. I had an easier time remembering them and the quirks of Fairieland, and it had a better flow for me compared to The Cruel Prince. That one was more of an awkward introduction where you forget someone’s name right away, and don’t know what to do with your hands. The Wicked Prince felt like I was visiting a good friend’s house on New Years – I know enough people to feel comfortable, and have my hands around a drink…although I should be worried about someone spiking it…

Enough nonsense. Even if this isn’t your usual genre, do yourself a favor and settle into this delightfully wicked story by Holly Black. You won’t be disappointed!
